Less CORPORATE, more personal – The Great Makeover of Business Presence

There is a big change shift in an online world. More and more companies change the mood of their websites to more personal. Open cubicles and loosen up tie? Not so fast.

For big corporations so called Web2.0 is a big challenge. It’s great when you have raving fans on all social networks, posting on forums and blogging about your latest product. Not so great, if nobody talks about you. Even worse, when they tell everyone to stay away from your company.

If one blog post can reach literally everyone (if it goes viral) how can you avoid a total destruction of your brand?

Some companies are smartening up and starting their own blogs to contrapart the effect. Of course, there is also an issue of credibility – would you believe ‘everything’ they write? The other solution is to employ ‘firefighters’ – social managers. Those are usually young people relentlessly monitoring web (it can be as easy as setting a Google Alert for your company name or product). Their task is to answer questions and solve customer problems before the ‘The Worst Customer Service Ever’ article reach the front page of Digg. Some of the companies in their desperation went to dark side – they asked their employees to pose as regular social user (creating false profiles on various social networks) and write positive reviews for products.

In UK this practice is illegal. So how can you make sure the social media works for you, not against?
